Venezuela and New Zealand: From Angel Falls to Aotearoa

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is a sovereign nation in northern South America, bordered by Colombia to the west, Brazil to the south, Guyana to the east, and the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean to the north. With a population of approximately 32 million (noting significant emigration since 2015) and a territory of 916,445 km², Venezuela encompasses extraordinary geographic diversity: the Andes Mountains in the west, the Llanos (tropical savanna plains) in the centre, the Amazon rainforest in the south, the Guiana Highlands (tepui plateau) in the southeast, and 2,800 km of Caribbean coastline. The capital is Caracas, situated in a mountain valley at 900 metres above sea level, while the main international airport (CCS, Simón Bolívar International) is located in Maiquetía on the Caribbean coast.

Venezuela is one of the world’s most biodiverse nations — classified as a “megadiverse” country — with over 1,400 bird species, 25,000 plant species, and 1,454 freshwater fish species. The country is also home to Angel Falls (Salto Ángel) on the Churún River in Canaima National Park — the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall at 979 metres, nearly 20 times the height of Niagara Falls. Venezuela was named for “Little Venice” by Spanish explorers who observed coastal stilt villages. Simón Bolívar, Venezuela’s independence hero, liberated six countries from Spanish colonial rule in the early 19th century.

Venezuela is on New Zealand’s visa-waiver list. Citizens holding a valid Venezuelan biometric passport must obtain an approved NZeTA before travelling to New Zealand for tourism, business visits, or transit. The NZeTA is obtained entirely online — no embassy visit required — and is typically approved within 72 hours.

NZeTA Requirements for Venezuelan Citizens

Four documents are required to complete the NZeTA application online from Caracas or anywhere in Venezuela.

01
Valid Venezuelan Biometric Passport
Your Venezuelan passport must be biometric (chip-enabled) and valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from New Zealand. The passport number, full name, and date of birth entered in the NZeTA application must exactly match your passport. If you renew or replace your passport after NZeTA approval, a new application must be submitted. Passport services are available through SAIME (Servicio Administrativo de Identificación, Migración y Extranjería).
02
Recent Digital Photograph
Upload a clear, well-lit photograph taken against a plain white or very light background. The photograph must be recent (taken within the last 6 months), show your full face without glasses or headwear (unless worn for religious reasons), and meet biometric specifications. Photographs with shadows, heavy editing, or patterned backgrounds will delay your application.
03
Active Email Address
All NZeTA communications — confirmation, approval, and reference number — are delivered by email. Provide an address you actively monitor. Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail addresses are all accepted; a Venezuelan domain is not required. Check your spam folder if you do not receive a confirmation within a few hours of submitting your application.
04
Payment Method (Visa or Mastercard)
The NZeTA processing fee and the mandatory New Zealand International Visitor Levy (IVL) are paid online using a Visa or Mastercard. All fees are charged in NZD. Venezuela uses the Bolívar Soberano (VES) but NZeTA fees are in NZD at the prevailing exchange rate. Ensure your card is enabled for international online transactions before applying.
