Doubly landlocked — enclosed by two landlocked nations
Fürstentum Liechtenstein · Principality → Aotearoa New Zealand
Liechtenstein is on New Zealand's visa-waiver list. Despite being one of the world's smallest countries — and the only nation located entirely within the Alps — Liechtenstein citizens hold strong international travel rights. The NZeTA is the only requirement for a New Zealand visit up to 90 days.
There is no airport in Liechtenstein. The nearest international airports are Zurich (ZRH), approximately 80 km away, and Vienna (VIE), approximately 200 km away. From Zurich, connections to Auckland via Singapore are available within approximately 24 to 26 hours total.
Liechtenstein is one of the world's smallest and wealthiest nations — a constitutional monarchy of 39,000 people occupying 160 km² in the Central Alps between Switzerland and Austria. It holds the distinction of being the only country in the world located entirely within the Alps, and one of only two countries in the world that is doubly landlocked — surrounded entirely by landlocked nations (the other is Uzbekistan). Its capital Vaduz, perched beneath a medieval castle overlooking the Rhine Valley, has a population of approximately 5,800.
Liechtenstein uses the Swiss Franc (CHF) and has an open border with Switzerland — Swiss and Liechtenstein citizens move freely between the two countries, and the nearest major international airport (Zurich ZRH) is approximately 80 km and 1.5 hours from Vaduz by road. Liechtenstein is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Schengen Area, but is not a member of the European Union. Its passport carries strong international travel rights, including visa-waiver access to New Zealand via the NZeTA.
Despite its size, Liechtenstein has an unusually sophisticated economy — dominated by precision manufacturing, financial services, and dental technology exports. It has one of the world's highest per-capita incomes. New Zealand, with its similarly high per-capita income and extraordinary natural environment, is a compelling destination for Liechtenstein citizens accustomed to alpine landscapes who wish to experience the Southern Hemisphere equivalent.
Four items are required. All details must match your Liechtenstein passport exactly.
| # | Requirement | What to Prepare |

| 2 | Recent Digital Face Photograph | Passport-style photo taken within the last 6 months. Plain light background, no sunglasses, no headwear except religious, full face clearly visible. Uploaded online — no printed copy required. |
| 3 | Active Email Address | NZeTA approval is delivered by email. Keep accessible at check-in at your departing airport (ZRH, VIE, or MUC) and on arrival in New Zealand. No printed document is required at the border. |
| 4 | Payment Card (NZeTA Fee + IVL) | Credit or debit card to pay the NZeTA service fee and the mandatory NZ government IVL levy together. Non-refundable. Liechtenstein uses CHF — your bank converts to NZD at the prevailing rate. |
No embassy. No appointment. Apply from Vaduz or anywhere at our NZeTA application page. Apply at least 3 days before your departure airport check-in.
The NZeTA covers short-term visits only. See the tourist visa, business visa, and transit visa pages for activities requiring a separate visa.
Liechtenstein has no national airport. Citizens travel to the nearest international airports and fly to Auckland from there. Three primary gateway airports serve Liechtenstein residents, each within approximately 80–200 km of Vaduz.
No airport, no problem: Liechtenstein's position at the centre of the European rail and road network means that Zurich, Vienna, and Munich airports are all straightforward to reach. Zurich is the most convenient option for most Liechtenstein residents and offers the widest range of long-haul routes to Auckland.

Liechtenstein holds an extraordinary number of global distinctions for a nation of 39,000 people. Each superlative tells a story about what it means to be this particular small country — and several have unexpected echoes in New Zealand.
Liechtenstein is entirely alpine — every square kilometre is either mountain, valley, or Rhine floodplain. The Rhine forms its entire western border with Switzerland. The country's highest point, Grauspitz (2,599 m), is accessible by foot from the capital. There is no flat land.
NZ parallel: New Zealand's Southern Alps run the length of the South Island — Liechtenstein travellers find the scale comparable and the mountaineering culture immediately familiar. The Aoraki/Mount Cook region and the glaciers of Franz Josef are the closest New Zealand equivalent to the Liechtenstein alpine environment.
Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan are the only two nations in the world completely surrounded by other landlocked countries — meaning no country bordering them has a coastline. This geographic isolation has been central to Liechtenstein's history, forcing economic innovation in precision manufacturing and financial services rather than maritime trade.
NZ parallel: New Zealand is the opposite extreme — one of the world's most coastally exposed nations, with no point further than 120 km from the sea. For landlocked Liechtenstein travellers, New Zealand's relationship with the ocean is one of the most fundamental and immediate differences they encounter.
Liechtenstein disbanded its army after the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and has maintained no standing military force since 1868 — making it one of the world's few permanently demilitarised nations. The last Liechtenstein military force of 80 soldiers returned from the war with 81 men, having acquired an Italian friend en route home.
NZ parallel: New Zealand declared itself a nuclear-free zone in 1987 and has maintained a strongly peace-oriented foreign policy since — a small nation that has chosen to define itself by what it refuses to participate in, rather than by military capacity. Both countries use diplomatic and economic influence rather than military power.
Liechtenstein-based Ivoclar Vivadent is one of the world's leading dental materials companies, manufacturing dental ceramics and resins in Schaan that supply dental laboratories and clinics worldwide. Liechtenstein's precision manufacturing tradition — watchmaking, instruments, dental technology — produces exports of extraordinary value per square kilometre relative to any other nation.
NZ parallel: New Zealand is one of the world's largest per-capita exporters of dairy products, wine, and kiwifruit. Like Liechtenstein, it has developed export industries of outsized global significance from a tiny domestic base — different products, the same structural achievement of small scale producing global reach.
