The Kingdom of Tonga is the only surviving indigenous monarchy in the Pacific, ruled by the Royal House of Tupou since the unification of the islands under King Siaosi Tupou I in 1845. Located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean northeast of New Zealand and south of Fiji, Tonga comprises 169 islands (52 inhabited) grouped into three main island chains: Tongatapu (south, including the capital Nuku‘alofa), Ha‘apai (central), and Vava‘u (north). The total land area is approximately 747 km² with a population of around 100,000. The Tongan language, Christianity (Wesleyan/Methodist tradition is dominant), and the chiefly system are the foundations of Tongan cultural identity. Tonga was never formally colonised and voluntarily became a British protectorate in 1900, gaining full independence in 1970 while retaining its monarchy.
The Tongan diaspora in New Zealand is one of the Pacific’s most significant, with over 80,000 people of Tongan descent living in New Zealand — primarily in South Auckland, which has the largest urban Tongan community in the world. The RSE (Recognised Seasonal Employer) scheme sends thousands of Tongan workers annually to New Zealand for horticulture and viticulture work. New Zealand is Tonga’s primary source of remittances and maintains strong Pacific partnership ties with the Kingdom through development assistance, disaster response, and educational programmes.
Tonga is on New Zealand’s visa-waiver list. Citizens holding a valid Tongan biometric passport must obtain an approved NZeTA before travelling to New Zealand for tourism, business visits, or transit. RSE workers travel on a separate work visa.
Four documents are required to complete the NZeTA application online from Nuku‘alofa or anywhere in Tonga.

Tonga is among the closest Pacific island nations to New Zealand — direct service brings both countries within 3.5 hours of each other.
Tonga’s four island groups each offer distinct landscapes, marine environments, and cultural experiences.
The Tongatapu group is Tonga’s most populous and politically significant island chain, home to the capital Nuku‘alofa, the Royal Palace, and the ancient Ha‘amonga ‘a Maui stone trilithon (erected ~1200 AD, sometimes called the Stonehenge of the Pacific). Tongatapu hosts the majority of international visitors and is the base for most commercial and diplomatic activity in the Kingdom.
Vava‘u is Tonga’s most celebrated eco-tourism destination, renowned as one of only a handful of places on Earth where visitors can legally swim with humpback whales in open water. Every year from July to October, humpback whales migrate from their Antarctic feeding grounds to Tongan waters to breed and calve. Vava‘u’s protected harbour (Port of Refuge) is also Polynesia’s premier sailing destination.
The Ha‘apai group occupies the central arc of Tonga and is one of the Pacific’s last truly undeveloped archipelagos. Its shallow lagoons, white-sand beaches, and coral reef systems remain largely untouched by mass tourism. The group includes Lifuka (the main island), Uiha, and numerous uninhabited atolls accessible only by local ferry. Ha‘apai’s volcanic activity — including the 2022 eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha‘apai — places it at the geological frontier of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
‘Eua is Tonga’s oldest and most geologically complex island, containing one of the Pacific’s few remaining primary rainforests. The ‘Eua National Park protects rare endemic bird species — including the ‘Eua parrot and Pacific pigeon — and ancient trail networks used for centuries by Tongan communities. Unlike the low-lying atolls of Ha‘apai, ‘Eua rises to 312 metres, offering dramatic cliff formations overlooking the Pacific.
