As a European Union member state since 2004, Lithuania is part of New Zealand's visa-waiver programme. Lithuanian citizens do not need a traditional tourist visa for short visits — instead, they must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before departure. The NZeTA is applied for entirely online, takes less than five minutes to complete, and is typically approved within 72 hours.
The NZeTA is electronically attached to your Lithuanian passport — there is no physical document to collect or carry. Airline staff verify it at check-in, and New Zealand border officers access it automatically on arrival. It is valid for 2 years with multiple entries, allowing you to visit New Zealand more than once without reapplying.
Apply for NZeTA Online
Have these four items ready before opening the NZeTA application form. Gathering them in advance makes the process faster and reduces the chance of errors.
Valid for at least 3 months after your scheduled departure from New Zealand. The NZeTA is linked to this exact passport number.
Recent passport-style face photograph. Plain background, clear image, no sunglasses or head coverings (unless worn for religious reasons).
Your NZeTA approval is delivered by email. Use an address you check regularly and keep accessible during travel and at the airport.
Credit or debit card to pay the NZeTA processing fee and the mandatory New Zealand IVL government levy in a single transaction.
No embassy. No appointment. No paper forms. Apply from Vilnius, Kaunas, or anywhere in the world at our NZeTA application page.
Enter your full legal name, date of birth, Lithuanian passport number, and expiry date exactly as they appear in your travel document. Every character must match — errors delay processing.
Attach your digital face photograph and answer the mandatory health and character declarations honestly. False statements result in rejection and may affect future travel to New Zealand.
Complete payment securely online by card. The total covers the NZeTA processing fee and the mandatory International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) — a New Zealand government charge paid at application.
Approval arrives by email within 72 hours. The NZeTA is electronically linked to your passport — no printing needed. Apply at least 3 days before your departure from Vilnius or Kaunas.
The NZeTA covers short-term visits only. Check that your reason for travelling falls within an approved category before applying. Activities outside this list require a separate New Zealand visa.
See the tourist visa, business visa, and transit visa pages for detailed category guidance.
There are no direct flights from Lithuania to New Zealand. Lithuanian citizens depart from Vilnius International Airport (VNO) — the main hub — or Kaunas International Airport (KUN), which serves several low-cost European routes. All itineraries require at least one connection through a major long-haul hub before reaching Auckland (AKL) or Christchurch (CHC). Total journey time from Lithuania to New Zealand is approximately 22 to 27 hours.

Tip: An open-jaw ticket — flying into Auckland (AKL) and departing from Christchurch (CHC), or the reverse — is popular among Lithuanian visitors and avoids backtracking between the North and South Islands. The NZeTA is valid for entry at all New Zealand airports.
Lithuania is the largest of the three Baltic states — a country of medieval cities, ancient forests, amber coastlines, and a people shaped by a history of resilience and fierce independence. New Zealand is defined by a similar spirit. These parallels make the journey feel meaningful, and the differences make it extraordinary.
Forests cover around 35% of Lithuania and are central to national identity. New Zealand shares the same deep relationship with its native bush — ancient kauri groves, beech forests, and fern-filled river valleys carry the same sense of protected, living land.
Lithuania was the first Soviet republic to declare independence in 1990. That same fierce national pride lives in New Zealand's Māori culture — a people who never ceded sovereignty and whose language, haka, and traditions are central to national life, not a historical footnote.
Amber from the Baltic coast has been traded as a precious material for millennia — Lithuania is its historic centre. New Zealand's equivalent is pounamu (greenstone), found in the rivers of the South Island and held sacred by Māori. Both cultures invest deep meaning in their native stone.
Lithuania is one of Europe's least densely populated countries outside Scandinavia. New Zealand is similarly uncrowded — vast national parks, empty beaches, and mountain roads where you may drive for hours without seeing another vehicle.
Lithuania has no volcanoes. Rotorua on the North Island sits on one of the world's most active geothermal fields — boiling mud pools, erupting geysers, steaming lakes, and the strongest living concentration of Māori culture in New Zealand, all within one region.
Lithuania's highest point is Aukštojas Hill at just 294 metres. Milford Sound's cliff walls rise over 1,600 metres sheer from the water. The vertical scale of Fiordland has no European equivalent. See it by boat at dawn before the tourist cruises begin.
Lithuanians understand the power of collective song and movement through the Dainų šventė national song festival. The Māori haka is a different expression of the same principle — a communal performance that is physically powerful, spiritually charged, and unlike any cultural experience available elsewhere.
New Zealand evolved in isolation for 85 million years. Its wildlife — kiwi, kakapo, kea, tuatara, Hector's dolphins — exists nowhere else on earth. Lithuanian nature is rich, but New Zealand's endemic species represent a completely different branch of life.
Lithuania and New Zealand sit in opposite hemispheres — seasons are reversed. A Lithuanian winter departure arrives into a New Zealand summer. This inversion makes timing especially important for outdoor-focused trips.
Long days, beach weather, hiking, campervan season. Perfect escape from Lithuania's coldest months. Book accommodation early — peak season.
Mild temperatures, wine region harvests, fewer tourists, scenic road trips. Excellent value. Fiordland is at its most dramatic after autumn rains.
Skiing and snowboarding in Queenstown and Wanaka. Cooler in the South Island — pack warm layers. Quieter cities and lower prices outside ski towns.
Wildflowers, waterfalls at full flow, excellent hiking, shoulder-season pricing. Weather can change quickly — dress in layers and check forecasts.
Vilnius has one of Europe's finest intact medieval old towns. Rotorua offers something completely opposite — a landscape of steam, boiling earth, and active geysers, combined with the most accessible living Māori cultural experience in New Zealand. A pōwhiri (formal Māori welcome) and a hāngī meal (food cooked underground) are experiences unavailable anywhere else.
For Lithuanian travellers whose highest peak is under 300 metres, Milford Sound's 1,600-metre vertical cliffs rising from the sea are genuinely overwhelming. Cruise in by boat. Watch waterfalls cascade directly from the cliff tops into the salt water. Dolphins and seals are common. Arrive early before the main tour groups.
The Curonian Spit — a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared between Lithuania and Russia — is famous for its towering sand dunes. New Zealand has an equivalent at Te Paki near Ninety Mile Beach in Northland: massive coastal sand dunes where you can sandboard down into the ocean. A striking parallel for Lithuanian travellers.
Lithuania is world-famous for basketball — a sport of precision, athleticism, and team spirit. Queenstown channels a similar competitive energy, but into bungee jumping, skydiving, jet boating, white-water rafting, and alpine skiing. The world's first commercial bungee site (Kawarau Bridge) is here. An unmissable stop for Lithuanians who live for an active challenge.
Lithuania understands the power of a founding document — the Act of Independence of Lithuania (1918 and 1990) is at the core of national identity. Waitangi in the Bay of Islands is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 — New Zealand's founding document between the British Crown and Māori chiefs. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds offer one of the country's most important historical and cultural visits.
Lithuania's summer nights barely darken. New Zealand's South Island — particularly the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, one of only a handful of Gold-tier reserves globally — offers night skies of extraordinary clarity. The southern Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds, and star clusters invisible from Europe are visible here without equipment on a clear night.
