Lithuania Qualifies for the New Zealand NZeTA

As a European Union member state since 2004, Lithuania is part of New Zealand's visa-waiver programme. Lithuanian citizens do not need a traditional tourist visa for short visits — instead, they must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before departure. The NZeTA is applied for entirely online, takes less than five minutes to complete, and is typically approved within 72 hours.

The NZeTA is electronically attached to your Lithuanian passport — there is no physical document to collect or carry. Airline staff verify it at check-in, and New Zealand border officers access it automatically on arrival. It is valid for 2 years with multiple entries, allowing you to visit New Zealand more than once without reapplying.

NZeTA Eligibility — Who Qualifies and Who Does Not

You Are Eligible for NZeTA If:

  • You hold a valid Lithuanian passport issued by the Republic of Lithuania
  • Your passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from New Zealand
  • Your purpose of travel is tourism, a holiday, visiting family or friends, short business activity, or transit
  • You have no disqualifying criminal convictions or prior deportation from New Zealand or other countries
  • You intend to stay for no more than 90 days per visit

The NZeTA Does Not Cover:

  • Paid employment of any kind — a New Zealand work visa is required
  • Study lasting longer than 3 months — a student visa is required
  • Medical treatment — a visitor visa with medical conditions is required
  • Stays exceeding 90 days — a visitor visa extension is needed
  • Applications for New Zealand residency or permanent settlement

What to Prepare Before You Apply

Have these four items ready before opening the NZeTA application form. Gathering them in advance makes the process faster and reduces the chance of errors.

Lithuanian Passport

Valid for at least 3 months after your scheduled departure from New Zealand. The NZeTA is linked to this exact passport number.

Digital Photo

Recent passport-style face photograph. Plain background, clear image, no sunglasses or head coverings (unless worn for religious reasons).

Email Address

Your NZeTA approval is delivered by email. Use an address you check regularly and keep accessible during travel and at the airport.

Payment Card

Credit or debit card to pay the NZeTA processing fee and the mandatory New Zealand IVL government levy in a single transaction.

How to Apply — 4 Steps, Fully Online

No embassy. No appointment. No paper forms. Apply from Vilnius, Kaunas, or anywhere in the world at our NZeTA application page.

1

Fill In Your Passport Details

Enter your full legal name, date of birth, Lithuanian passport number, and expiry date exactly as they appear in your travel document. Every character must match — errors delay processing.

2

Upload Your Photo & Declarations

Attach your digital face photograph and answer the mandatory health and character declarations honestly. False statements result in rejection and may affect future travel to New Zealand.

3

Pay the NZeTA and IVL Fee

Complete payment securely online by card. The total covers the NZeTA processing fee and the mandatory International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) — a New Zealand government charge paid at application.

Receive Your NZeTA by Email

Approval arrives by email within 72 hours. The NZeTA is electronically linked to your passport — no printing needed. Apply at least 3 days before your departure from Vilnius or Kaunas.

NZeTA Permitted Activities

The NZeTA covers short-term visits only. Check that your reason for travelling falls within an approved category before applying. Activities outside this list require a separate New Zealand visa.

Allowed Under NZeTA

  • Tourism, sightseeing, and leisure holidays
  • Visiting family members or friends residing in New Zealand
  • Attending business meetings, conferences, or trade exhibitions
  • Short recreational or language courses (under 3 months)
  • Transit through Auckland or any New Zealand airport
  • Volunteer activities with no payment for up to 3 months

Not Permitted — Separate Visa Required

  • Any form of paid employment or working for a New Zealand employer
  • Enrolling in study programmes lasting longer than 3 months
  • Receiving medical treatment or planned medical procedures
  • Staying in New Zealand for more than 90 consecutive days
  • Applying for or seeking New Zealand residency or citizenship

See the tourist visa, business visa, and transit visa pages for detailed category guidance.

Flights from Lithuania to New Zealand

There are no direct flights from Lithuania to New Zealand. Lithuanian citizens depart from Vilnius International Airport (VNO) — the main hub — or Kaunas International Airport (KUN), which serves several low-cost European routes. All itineraries require at least one connection through a major long-haul hub before reaching Auckland (AKL) or Christchurch (CHC). Total journey time from Lithuania to New Zealand is approximately 22 to 27 hours.

Via Warsaw & Dubai

Vilnius → Warsaw (WAW) → Dubai (DXB) → Auckland

LOT Polish Airlines connects Vilnius to Warsaw, from where Emirates operates to Dubai with onward service to Auckland. LOT and Emirates have a well-established codeshare on this routing popular with Baltic travellers.

Approx. travel time: 22–25 hours

Via Helsinki & Doha

Vilnius → Helsinki (HEL) → Doha (DOH) → Auckland

Finnair connects Vilnius to Helsinki, from where Qatar Airways operates to Doha with a direct Doha–Auckland flight. This routing offers a smooth transit and is one of the more straightforward options from the Baltics.

Approx. travel time: 24–27 hours

Via Frankfurt & Singapore

Vilnius → Frankfurt (FRA) → Singapore (SIN) → Auckland

Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners connect Vilnius to Frankfurt, with onward services to Singapore and then Auckland or Christchurch. A reliable multi-carrier routing with strong schedule options.

Approx. travel time: 25–28 hours

Via Amsterdam & Singapore

Vilnius → Amsterdam (AMS) → Singapore (SIN) → Auckland

KLM serves Vilnius with connections to Amsterdam, from where Singapore Airlines or KLM flies the Asia-Pacific leg to New Zealand. Suitable for travellers who prefer a Singapore transit or stopover before the final sector.

Approx. travel time: 26–28 hours

Tip: An open-jaw ticket — flying into Auckland (AKL) and departing from Christchurch (CHC), or the reverse — is popular among Lithuanian visitors and avoids backtracking between the North and South Islands. The NZeTA is valid for entry at all New Zealand airports.

Lithuania to New Zealand — What Feels Familiar, What Is Entirely New

Lithuania is the largest of the three Baltic states — a country of medieval cities, ancient forests, amber coastlines, and a people shaped by a history of resilience and fierce independence. New Zealand is defined by a similar spirit. These parallels make the journey feel meaningful, and the differences make it extraordinary.

What Feels Familiar

Forests and Nature Culture

Forests cover around 35% of Lithuania and are central to national identity. New Zealand shares the same deep relationship with its native bush — ancient kauri groves, beech forests, and fern-filled river valleys carry the same sense of protected, living land.

Independence and Cultural Pride

Lithuania was the first Soviet republic to declare independence in 1990. That same fierce national pride lives in New Zealand's Māori culture — a people who never ceded sovereignty and whose language, haka, and traditions are central to national life, not a historical footnote.

Amber and Pounamu — Sacred Stones

Amber from the Baltic coast has been traded as a precious material for millennia — Lithuania is its historic centre. New Zealand's equivalent is pounamu (greenstone), found in the rivers of the South Island and held sacred by Māori. Both cultures invest deep meaning in their native stone.

Clean Air and Space

Lithuania is one of Europe's least densely populated countries outside Scandinavia. New Zealand is similarly uncrowded — vast national parks, empty beaches, and mountain roads where you may drive for hours without seeing another vehicle.

What Is Entirely New

Volcanic Landscapes and Geothermal Activity

Lithuania has no volcanoes. Rotorua on the North Island sits on one of the world's most active geothermal fields — boiling mud pools, erupting geysers, steaming lakes, and the strongest living concentration of Māori culture in New Zealand, all within one region.

The Scale of Fiordland

Lithuania's highest point is Aukštojas Hill at just 294 metres. Milford Sound's cliff walls rise over 1,600 metres sheer from the water. The vertical scale of Fiordland has no European equivalent. See it by boat at dawn before the tourist cruises begin.

The Haka and Māori Performing Culture

Lithuanians understand the power of collective song and movement through the Dainų šventė national song festival. The Māori haka is a different expression of the same principle — a communal performance that is physically powerful, spiritually charged, and unlike any cultural experience available elsewhere.

Wildlife Found Nowhere Else

New Zealand evolved in isolation for 85 million years. Its wildlife — kiwi, kakapo, kea, tuatara, Hector's dolphins — exists nowhere else on earth. Lithuanian nature is rich, but New Zealand's endemic species represent a completely different branch of life.

When Should Lithuanian Citizens Visit New Zealand?

Lithuania and New Zealand sit in opposite hemispheres — seasons are reversed. A Lithuanian winter departure arrives into a New Zealand summer. This inversion makes timing especially important for outdoor-focused trips.

Dec — Feb
NZ Summer

Long days, beach weather, hiking, campervan season. Perfect escape from Lithuania's coldest months. Book accommodation early — peak season.

Mar — May
NZ Autumn

Mild temperatures, wine region harvests, fewer tourists, scenic road trips. Excellent value. Fiordland is at its most dramatic after autumn rains.

Jun — Aug
NZ Winter

Skiing and snowboarding in Queenstown and Wanaka. Cooler in the South Island — pack warm layers. Quieter cities and lower prices outside ski towns.

Sep — Nov
NZ Spring

Wildflowers, waterfalls at full flow, excellent hiking, shoulder-season pricing. Weather can change quickly — dress in layers and check forecasts.

Top New Zealand Experiences for Lithuanian Travellers

01

Vilnius to Rotorua — From Medieval to Geothermal

Vilnius has one of Europe's finest intact medieval old towns. Rotorua offers something completely opposite — a landscape of steam, boiling earth, and active geysers, combined with the most accessible living Māori cultural experience in New Zealand. A pōwhiri (formal Māori welcome) and a hāngī meal (food cooked underground) are experiences unavailable anywhere else.

02

Milford Sound — Scale Like Nothing in Europe

For Lithuanian travellers whose highest peak is under 300 metres, Milford Sound's 1,600-metre vertical cliffs rising from the sea are genuinely overwhelming. Cruise in by boat. Watch waterfalls cascade directly from the cliff tops into the salt water. Dolphins and seals are common. Arrive early before the main tour groups.

03

Curonian Spit Sand Dunes → Te Paki Sand Dunes

The Curonian Spit — a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared between Lithuania and Russia — is famous for its towering sand dunes. New Zealand has an equivalent at Te Paki near Ninety Mile Beach in Northland: massive coastal sand dunes where you can sandboard down into the ocean. A striking parallel for Lithuanian travellers.

04

Queenstown — Lithuania's Basketball Spirit Meets Adventure

Lithuania is world-famous for basketball — a sport of precision, athleticism, and team spirit. Queenstown channels a similar competitive energy, but into bungee jumping, skydiving, jet boating, white-water rafting, and alpine skiing. The world's first commercial bungee site (Kawarau Bridge) is here. An unmissable stop for Lithuanians who live for an active challenge.

05

Waitangi and New Zealand's Independence Story

Lithuania understands the power of a founding document — the Act of Independence of Lithuania (1918 and 1990) is at the core of national identity. Waitangi in the Bay of Islands is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 — New Zealand's founding document between the British Crown and Māori chiefs. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds offer one of the country's most important historical and cultural visits.

06

Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve

Lithuania's summer nights barely darken. New Zealand's South Island — particularly the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, one of only a handful of Gold-tier reserves globally — offers night skies of extraordinary clarity. The southern Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds, and star clusters invisible from Europe are visible here without equipment on a clear night.

Before You Leave Lithuania — Pre-Departure Checklist

  • NZeTA approved and email saved
Keep the approval email accessible — on your phone or printed — for check-in at Vilnius or Kaunas Airport.
  • Passport validity confirmed
Check your Lithuanian passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from New Zealand.
  • Hiking and outdoor gear cleaned
New Zealand's biosecurity rules require boots, camping gear, and fishing equipment to be clean and free of soil before departure. Dirty gear can be confiscated at the border.
  • Driving side confirmed
Lithuania drives on the right. New Zealand drives on the left. If renting a vehicle, plan a rest day after arrival before driving rural or mountain roads.
  • Bank notified of travel
Inform your Lithuanian bank before departure to avoid card blocks on NZD transactions. Contactless payment is widely available throughout New Zealand.
  • Food and plant products declared
Any food, plant, or animal product carried from Lithuania must be declared on the NZ arrival card — even cured meats, seeds, or dried herbs. When in doubt, declare.

Frequently Asked Questions — NZeTA for Lithuanian Citizens

Yes. Lithuanian citizens holding a valid Lithuanian passport must obtain an approved NZeTA before travelling to New Zealand for tourism, eligible business activity, or transit. Lithuania is on New Zealand's visa-waiver list, so no traditional tourist visa is required — the NZeTA replaces it.
Yes. A valid Lithuanian biometric passport is the primary document required for the NZeTA application. The authority is electronically linked to your passport number. If you renew your passport before travelling, a new NZeTA application is required — the existing one cannot be transferred to a new passport.
The NZeTA is valid for 2 years from the date of approval and allows multiple entries to New Zealand within that period. Each individual visit is limited to 90 days. You do not need to reapply for each trip — the same NZeTA covers all visits during its 2-year validity.
Lithuanian citizens can depart from Vilnius International Airport (VNO) or Kaunas International Airport (KUN). Both offer European connections via LOT Polish Airlines, Finnair, Lufthansa, KLM, Ryanair, and Wizz Air, from where long-haul flights to New Zealand are available through major hubs including Dubai, Doha, Singapore, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt.
Most NZeTA applications are processed within 72 hours. Lithuanian citizens should apply at least 3 days before their scheduled departure to allow sufficient processing time. Applying well in advance — a week or more before travel — is recommended to allow time to resolve any issues with the application.
The NZeTA permits tourism, holidays, visiting family and friends, short business meetings, conferences, short courses under 3 months, and transit through New Zealand. It does not permit paid employment, long-term study (over 3 months), medical treatment, or applications for residency. Activities outside this list require a separate New Zealand visa obtained before departure.
