The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is required for all travelers from visa-waiver countries transiting through New Zealand. Whether you are passing through Auckland International Airport on a layover or stopping briefly on your way to another destination, you must hold a valid NZeTA before your flight departs. The transit NZeTA is the same authorization used for tourism and business travel — there is no separate transit-only application.
Transit passengers who are citizens of visa-waiver countries and are connecting through New Zealand to another destination must obtain an NZeTA before departure. Certain travelers are exempt:
The NZeTA application is completed entirely online and takes less than five minutes. For full details, visit the New Zealand eTA Application Form Guide.
To be eligible for an NZeTA for transit, travelers must:
NZeTA applications are typically processed within 72 hours. It is strongly advisable to apply well in advance of your departure date to avoid any last-minute complications.
Travelers must hold a valid passport from a visa-waiver country with a validity of at least three months beyond the intended departure date from New Zealand.
A confirmed onward ticket to your final destination is required to be eligible for transit through New Zealand.
Travelers may be required to provide proof of sufficient funds to support any brief stay in New Zealand during transit.
The NZeTA is valid for 2 years from the date of approval and allows multiple entries into New Zealand. Each stay must not exceed 90 days. Transit passengers typically remain in New Zealand for only a short period between connecting flights, but the NZeTA itself is not restricted to transit-only use — it covers tourism, business, and transit under a single authorization.
