New Zealand eTA for Czech citizens – NZeTA Czech Republic Czechia

New Zealand eTA for Czech Republic (Czechia) Citizens

Czech citizens — whether you refer to your country as the Czech Republic or Czechia — are eligible to visit New Zealand without a traditional visa. Instead, a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is required before departure. The application is entirely online, takes under five minutes, and is valid for 2 years with multiple entries.

New Zealand sits at the opposite end of the earth from Prague — roughly 18,500 kilometres and about 12–13 time zones away. The journey is significant, which is why most Czech travellers make New Zealand a major destination rather than a stopover. With 90 days allowed per visit, there is enough time to explore both islands properly.

Before You Apply — What You Need to Know

Read the four key facts below before starting your NZeTA application:

Your Czech passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from New Zealand. The NZeTA is electronically linked to the specific passport number you provide — if you renew your passport before your trip, you must apply for a new NZeTA. Check your passport expiry date carefully before applying, especially for long trips combining New Zealand and Australia.
You must meet New Zealand's health and character requirements. This means being in good health and having no disqualifying criminal convictions. Applicants with a serious criminal history or those who have previously been deported or refused entry to any country may be declined. All information in the NZeTA application must be truthful and accurate — providing false information is a serious offence.
New Zealand has some of the world's strictest biosecurity laws. On your arrival card, you must declare all food, plant material, and animal products. This includes sealed snacks, hiking boots with soil, and wooden items. Czech travellers should be especially careful about bringing traditional food products from home. Failure to declare can result in on-the-spot fines. When unsure — always declare.
The NZeTA is for tourism, business visits, and transit only. If you plan to work in New Zealand, you need a Working Holiday Visa (available to Czech citizens aged 18–30) or a work visa. See the comparison table below for the full differences between an NZeTA and a Working Holiday Visa.

NZeTA vs Working Holiday Visa — Which Do Czech Citizens Need?

Czech citizens are eligible for both an NZeTA and a New Zealand Working Holiday Visa. The right choice depends entirely on what you plan to do in New Zealand:

How to Apply for the NZeTA from Czech Republic

Apply online at our NZeTA application page. No embassy, no appointment, no paperwork. Here is what you need:

  • Valid Czech passport (with at least 3 months beyond your NZ departure date)
  • A recent face photograph (digital, uploaded during application)
  • An email address for your approval notification
  • A credit or debit card to pay the application fee

Processing typically takes 72 hours. Track your application status online and apply well before your departure from Prague.

Prague to Auckland — Getting There

Most Czech travellers depart from Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG). Common connecting routes to New Zealand include:

  • Prague → Dubai → Auckland (Emirates, approx. 22–24 hours)
  • Prague → Doha → Auckland (Qatar Airways, approx. 23–25 hours)
  • Prague → Amsterdam → Singapore → Auckland (KLM / Singapore Airlines, approx. 26–28 hours)
  • Prague → Frankfurt → Singapore → Auckland (Lufthansa / Singapore Airlines, approx. 25–27 hours)

Many Czech travellers combine New Zealand with Australia in one trip. Flying into Auckland and out of Sydney (or vice versa) gives you the best value for such a long-haul journey.

Why Czech Travellers Love New Zealand

Czech people have a deep tradition of outdoor hiking (turistika), castle exploration, and appreciation for craft beer and artisan culture. New Zealand delivers all of this — at a scale and intensity the Czech Republic cannot match:

Tongariro Crossing

Active volcanic craters and neon lakes on the world's best single-day hike — Czech turistika on a volcanic scale

Milford Sound

Sheer granite cliffs rising from a glacier-carved fiord. One of the most dramatic landscapes on earth

Nelson Craft Beer

New Zealand's Nelson region grows world-class hops. Czech beer culture will find a worthy rival here

Hobbiton, Matamata

Tour the real film set of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit in the green hills of the Waikato

Rotorua Geothermal

Mud pools, geysers, and Maori cultural performances. Completely unlike anything in Central Europe

Pounamu (Greenstone)

New Zealand's sacred jade — Maori greenstone carving rivals the Czech artisan tradition. Buy directly from a carver in Hokitika

Great Walks

New Zealand has 10 Great Walks — multi-day tracks through fiords, forests, and volcanoes. Book huts well in advance

Queenstown

Bungee jumping, skydiving, jet boating, skiing. The adventure capital of the world — all in one lakeside town

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes. Czech citizens holding a valid Czech (Czechia) passport must obtain an NZeTA before travelling to New Zealand for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, business, or transit.
The NZeTA allows Czech citizens to visit New Zealand for tourism, business, or transit for up to 90 days — no work permitted. The Working Holiday Visa allows Czech citizens aged 18–30 to work in New Zealand for up to 12 months. If you plan to work or stay longer than 90 days, you need a Working Holiday Visa, not an NZeTA.
No. A Schengen visa has no bearing on New Zealand entry requirements. Czech citizens require an NZeTA regardless of any other visas they hold. The NZeTA is specific to New Zealand entry.
Your NZeTA is linked to your specific passport number. If your passport expires during your stay, contact your nearest Czech embassy or consulate to renew it. You will then need to apply for a new NZeTA linked to your new passport before your next visit to New Zealand.
Yes. Many travellers combine New Zealand and Australia in one trip. Your NZeTA covers New Zealand only — you will need a separate Australian eVisitor visa (free for Czech citizens) for Australia. The NZeTA allows multiple re-entries within 2 years, so you can visit New Zealand, fly to Australia, and return to New Zealand on the same NZeTA.
