NZeTA for Transit Passengers 2026: Do You Need an eTA to Transit New Zealand?
May 4, 2026 New Zealand eTA Articles

Transiting through Auckland or another New Zealand airport? You may need an NZeTA even if you are not entering New Zealand. This guide explains exactly who needs a transit NZeTA, who is exempt, and how to apply.

Do You Need an NZeTA to Transit Through New Zealand?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions from travellers with connecting flights through Auckland or other New Zealand airports. The short answer: yes, in most cases. If you are a citizen of a visa waiver country, you need a valid NZeTA even if you are only transiting through New Zealand and have no intention of entering the country.

This surprises many travellers — but New Zealand's entry requirements apply at the point of boarding your aircraft, not just at the border. Airlines will check your NZeTA status before allowing you to board a flight to New Zealand, regardless of whether it is your final destination or a stopover.

Who Needs an NZeTA for Transit?

You need an NZeTA for transit if you:

  • Hold a passport from a New Zealand visa waiver country
  • Are transiting through any New Zealand airport (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Dunedin, etc.)
  • Are transiting through New Zealand en route to another destination — even if you remain airside and do not go through immigration

Who Is Exempt From the Transit NZeTA Requirement?

You do not need an NZeTA for transit if you are:

  • An Australian citizen (exempt from the NZeTA entirely)
  • A New Zealand citizen or resident
  • A citizen of a country that requires a full New Zealand visitor visa (you would need a transit visa instead, if applicable)
  • Holding a valid New Zealand resident visa or returning resident visa

Does the NZeTA Cover Both Transit and Entry?

Yes. A standard NZeTA covers all purposes of travel to New Zealand, including transit, tourism, and business. There is no separate "transit NZeTA" — the same NZeTA that allows you to enter New Zealand for tourism also permits transit through New Zealand airports.

If you already have a valid NZeTA for a previous trip to New Zealand, check that it is still valid (within its two-year validity period) and linked to the same passport you are travelling with. If so, no new application is required for your transit.

Do I Need to Go Through Immigration for a New Zealand Transit?

This depends on your routing and connecting airport:

Airside Transit (No Immigration Required)

If you are connecting between international flights and remain in the international departure lounge, you typically do not need to pass through New Zealand immigration. However, you still need a valid NZeTA to board the inbound flight.

Landside Transit (Immigration Required)

If your connection requires you to collect checked baggage and re-check it for your onward flight, or if you need to exit the secure zone for any reason, you will pass through New Zealand immigration and will need your NZeTA active and valid.

If you are unsure which type of transit applies to your itinerary, check with your airline or refer to the airport's transit information before departure.

How to Apply for a Transit NZeTA

The application process is identical to a standard NZeTA:

  1. Complete the online application with your passport details
  2. Upload a recent passport-style photograph
  3. Answer the eligibility declarations
  4. Pay the application fee (including the NZD $35 IVL levy)
  5. Receive approval by email within 72 hours

Note: the IVL is payable by all NZeTA applicants — including transit passengers from visa waiver countries. This government levy applies regardless of whether you enter New Zealand or simply pass through its airports.

What Happens If I Board Without an NZeTA?

If you attempt to board a flight to New Zealand without a valid NZeTA, the airline will deny boarding. This is because airlines are responsible for checking travel documentation and can face significant penalties for transporting passengers who will be refused entry at the border.

Always confirm your NZeTA is valid and linked to your current passport before departing for the airport, even for a simple transit connection.

How Far in Advance Should Transit Passengers Apply?

Apply for your NZeTA at least 72 hours before your first flight departs. For complex itineraries involving multiple connections, apply as early as possible to avoid any last-minute issues. The NZeTA is valid for two years, so early application creates no inconvenience.
