NZeTA Requirements 2026: Complete Guide to New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority
June 3, 2026 New Zealand eTA Articles

Everything you need to know about NZeTA requirements in 2026 — who needs one, what documents are required, how to apply, and what to expect after submitting your application.

What Is the NZeTA?

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is a mandatory pre-travel authorisation for citizens of visa waiver countries travelling to New Zealand. Introduced in 2019, the NZeTA is electronically linked to your passport and must be obtained before you board your flight or cruise ship to New Zealand.

Unlike a traditional visa, the NZeTA does not involve attending an embassy or submitting physical documents. The entire process is completed online, usually within minutes.

Who Needs an NZeTA in 2026?

You need an NZeTA if you are a citizen of a visa waiver country and you plan to:

  • Visit New Zealand for tourism, holiday or a family visit
  • Travel to New Zealand for business meetings or conferences
  • Transit through a New Zealand airport
  • Arrive in New Zealand by cruise ship

Citizens of visa waiver countries include the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia (with some exceptions), most European Union nations, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and many more. Australian citizens do not need an NZeTA — they are exempt under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement.

NZeTA Requirements: What You Need

Before starting your NZeTA application, make sure you have the following ready:

1. Valid Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure date from New Zealand. Ensure the biographical details page is clear and undamaged. The NZeTA is electronically linked to the passport number you provide — if you renew your passport, you will need a new NZeTA.

2. Passport-Style Photograph

You will need to upload a recent photograph that meets the following standards:

  • Clear, colour photograph taken within the last six months
  • White or light-coloured background
  • Your face must be fully visible, centred, and in focus
  • No sunglasses, hats or head coverings (unless worn for religious reasons)
  • File must be JPG or JPEG format, under 5 MB

3. Email Address

A valid email address is required to receive your NZeTA approval. Ensure you have access to this inbox before and during your travel.

4. Payment Method

The NZeTA application fee can be paid by major credit card or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express). The fee covers processing and assistance.

5. Travel Details

Have your planned travel dates and, if known, your flight or cruise details to hand. You will also be asked basic questions about your health and criminal history.

NZeTA Eligibility Questions

As part of the application, you will need to answer a series of eligibility declarations, including:

  • Whether you have ever been deported or removed from any country
  • Whether you have any criminal convictions
  • Whether you require medical treatment during your stay
  • Whether you are an Australian permanent resident

Answering yes to any of these does not automatically disqualify you, but your application may be referred for further review.

How Long Is the NZeTA Valid?

Once approved, the NZeTA is valid for two years from the date of issue, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. During this validity period, you can make multiple trips to New Zealand. Each visit allows a stay of up to 90 days (or up to 6 months for British passport holders).

How to Apply for Your NZeTA

The NZeTA application process takes less than 10 minutes:

  1. Complete the online application form with your personal and passport details
  2. Upload your passport photograph
  3. Answer the eligibility declarations
  4. Pay the application fee securely online
  5. Receive your NZeTA approval by email — typically within 72 hours

We recommend applying at least 72 hours before your departure date to allow sufficient processing time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for an NZeTA on behalf of someone else?

Yes. Parents and guardians may apply on behalf of children. You may also apply on behalf of elderly relatives or others who need assistance with the online process.

Do I need to print my NZeTA?

No. The NZeTA is electronically linked to your passport. Airlines and border agencies verify it automatically when you travel. You do not need to carry a printed copy, though keeping a copy of your approval email as a backup is recommended.
