Can Your NZeTA Be Denied?
Yes — while the vast majority of NZeTA applications are approved without issue, Immigration New Zealand does decline a small number of applications each year. Understanding the most common reasons for refusal is the best way to ensure your application succeeds.
Top Reasons NZeTA Applications Are Denied
1. Criminal Convictions
This is one of the most frequent reasons for NZeTA denial. If you have a criminal conviction — in any country — you must declare it on your application. Attempting to conceal a conviction is considered misrepresentation and will result in immediate refusal.
Having a conviction does not automatically mean your NZeTA will be denied. Minor offences and isolated old convictions may still result in approval. However, serious criminal history involving violence, drugs, or fraud significantly increases the risk of refusal.
2. Previous Deportation or Removal
If you have previously been deported or removed from New Zealand, Australia, or any other country, this must be disclosed. A previous deportation from New Zealand will almost certainly result in NZeTA denial.
3. Passport Issues
- Passport validity of less than three months beyond your planned return date
- Damaged or unreadable passport pages
- Using a passport number that has been reported lost or stolen
- Providing incorrect passport details on the application form
4. Poor Quality Photograph
A blurry, incorrectly formatted, or non-compliant photograph is a leading cause of NZeTA processing problems. Your photo must show your full face clearly against a plain light background, in JPG format under 5 MB.
5. Incorrect Personal Information
Typographical errors in your name, date of birth, or passport number can cause your application to fail automated checks. Always cross-check your application details against your actual passport before submitting.
6. Previous Immigration Violations
If you have previously overstayed a visa, breached the conditions of a previous New Zealand entry, or been refused entry at the New Zealand border, this can result in an NZeTA denial.
What Happens When Your NZeTA Is Denied?
If your NZeTA application is declined, you will receive an email notification from Immigration New Zealand. You then have several options:
- Apply for a standard New Zealand visitor visa — the most common route for travellers whose NZeTA has been refused
- Request reconsideration — in some circumstances you may provide additional supporting documents
- Contact Immigration New Zealand directly — if you believe your application was denied in error
How to Maximise Your Chances of NZeTA Approval
- Apply well in advance — at least 72 hours, ideally more if your situation is complex
- Double-check all details — your name, passport number, and date of birth must exactly match your passport
- Use a high-quality photograph — take a new photo in good lighting against a plain background
- Answer all eligibility questions honestly — misrepresentation is always worse than declaring an issue
- Ensure your passport is valid — check the expiry date carefully before applying
