Special Cases and Exemptions
Australia
Australian citizens do not need an NZeTA — they may travel to New Zealand freely under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement. However, Australian permanent residents who are not Australian citizens do require an NZeTA if they hold a passport from a visa waiver country.
Cruise Ship Passengers
Visa waiver country passport holders arriving by cruise ship also require an NZeTA, regardless of whether they are going ashore.
Transit Passengers
If you are transiting through a New Zealand airport and your passport is from a visa waiver country, you need an NZeTA even if you do not pass through immigration.
My Country Is Not on the List — What Can I Do?
If your country is not listed above, you are not eligible for the NZeTA. You will need to apply for a New Zealand visitor visa through Immigration New Zealand. Visitor visa applications typically require additional documentation and a longer processing time.
How to Apply
If your country is eligible, you can apply for the NZeTA online today. The application takes less than 10 minutes and most applicants receive approval within 72 hours.
