NZeTA Processing Time: The Short Answer
In most cases, the NZeTA is approved within 72 hours of submission. Many applicants receive their approval within a few hours, sometimes even minutes. However, processing times can vary depending on a number of factors — and it is always safest to apply well in advance of your travel date.
Typical Processing Windows
- Same day approval: Many straightforward applications — particularly from low-risk travellers from major visa waiver countries — are approved within a few hours of submission.
- 24–48 hours: The most common processing window for the majority of applicants.
- Up to 72 hours: Some applications require additional review and may take up to three business days.
- Beyond 72 hours: A small number of applications are flagged for manual review and may take longer. This is uncommon but does occur.
What Affects NZeTA Processing Time?
1. Application Accuracy
Applications with errors — such as a misspelled name, incorrect passport number, or unclear photograph — may be delayed or require resubmission. Double-checking every detail before submitting is the single most effective way to ensure fast processing.
2. Photo Quality
Your uploaded photograph must meet strict standards. A blurry, low-resolution, or improperly framed photo is one of the most common causes of processing delays. Use a recent, clear passport-style photo against a plain light background.
3. Eligibility Declarations
If you answer yes to any of the eligibility questions — such as having a prior criminal conviction or previous deportation — your application will be referred for manual review by Immigration New Zealand. This process takes considerably longer than standard automated approvals.
4. Application Volume
During peak travel seasons (particularly November through January and June through August), application volumes increase significantly. This can cause slight delays in processing times.
When Should You Apply for Your NZeTA?
We strongly recommend applying for your NZeTA at least 72 hours before your departure. If you are travelling during peak season, or if you answered yes to any eligibility questions, applying at least two weeks in advance is advisable.
There is no penalty for applying early. Your NZeTA is valid for two years from the date of approval, regardless of when you submit your application.
What Happens After You Submit?
- Instant confirmation: You will receive an email confirming your application has been received and is being processed.
- Automated review: The majority of applications are processed automatically by Immigration New Zealand systems.
- Manual review (if required): Applications flagged for further checks are reviewed by an officer. You may be contacted for additional information.
- Approval email: Once approved, your NZeTA is electronically linked to your passport and you will receive a confirmation email.

How Long Is the NZeTA Valid Once Approved?
Once your NZeTA is approved, it is valid for two years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever is sooner. During this period, you can use it for multiple trips to New Zealand, staying up to 90 days per visit (or 6 months for British citizens).
