Can You Renew an NZeTA?
Strictly speaking, the NZeTA cannot be "renewed" in the traditional sense — there is no renewal button or extension process. Instead, when your NZeTA expires, you simply apply for a brand new NZeTA using the same online process as your original application. The new application takes the same amount of time and involves the same fee.
The good news: since you have been through the process before, a repeat application typically takes just a few minutes to complete.
How Long Is the NZeTA Valid?
The NZeTA is valid for two years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. This means:
- If your NZeTA was approved on 1 June 2024, it is valid until 1 June 2026
- If your passport expires before the two-year mark, your NZeTA also expires at passport expiry
- Multiple entries to New Zealand are permitted throughout the validity period
When Should You Apply for a New NZeTA?
You should apply for a new NZeTA:
- When your current NZeTA expires — apply before your next trip to New Zealand
- When your passport expires or is renewed — the NZeTA is linked to a specific passport number, so a new passport always requires a new NZeTA
- If you lose your passport — your replacement passport will need its own NZeTA
- At least 72 hours before your next departure to New Zealand
How to Apply for a New NZeTA (The Renewal Process)
The process for obtaining a new NZeTA after your old one expires is identical to your original application:
- Complete the online application form with your current passport details
- Upload a recent passport-style photograph
- Answer the eligibility declarations
- Pay the application fee (including the IVL levy)
- Receive your new NZeTA approval by email within 72 hours
There is no fast-track or returning-applicant process — all applicants go through the same system. However, the process is straightforward and most returning travellers complete it in under 5 minutes.
What If My Passport Changed Since My Last NZeTA?
If you have obtained a new passport since your last New Zealand trip, you must apply for a new NZeTA before travelling — even if your old NZeTA has not technically expired. The NZeTA is tied to a specific passport number. An NZeTA issued for your old passport is not valid for travel on your new passport.
This is one of the most common mistakes travellers make — always check that your NZeTA matches your current travel passport before departure.
How to Check If Your NZeTA Is Still Valid
To confirm whether your NZeTA is still active and linked to your current passport, check:
- The approval email you received when your NZeTA was issued — the approval date and two-year validity window will be stated
- That the passport number on your NZeTA approval email matches your current passport exactly
- That your passport itself has not expired or been replaced since the NZeTA was issued
If in doubt, applying for a new NZeTA is always the safest option. The cost is modest and approval is typically very quick for returning travellers with no changes to their circumstances.
Does NZeTA Renewal Cost the Same?
Yes — a new NZeTA application carries the same fee as your original application, including the mandatory government IVL levy of NZD $35. There is no reduced fee for repeat applicants or returning travellers.
Can My NZeTA Be Refused on Renewal?
Yes, in theory. If your circumstances have changed since your last application — for example, if you have acquired a criminal conviction or been involved in an immigration matter — your new NZeTA application may be reviewed more carefully or declined. If your situation has changed, contact our support team before reapplying so we can advise you on the best course of action.
